What to Expect from Engineering Science (An Answer to Secondary Four)
I went back to my secondary school for an education and career guidance sharing. Two questions came in afterwards that deserved more than the two minutes I had. So, properly.
"What should I expect from the course?"
Poly runs a project-based curriculum, so expect project-based assignments — especially in the common modules, the ones the whole School of Engineering takes, which have to be broad enough to serve everybody.
Expect not to be handheld. Nobody walks you through your tutorials. You are given real freedom — clubs, interest groups, competitions, leadership roles, the sky is genuinely the limit — and you are also expected to do well academically. Your peers might be getting 4.0. It matters more that you remember you are doing this for yourself.
If you end up in Engineering Science, N93, you will meet a lot of people who are exactly like you: doing things they have never done before, in electronics, applied mathematics, physics. You will be taught the principles of engineering and you will still, sometimes, feel like you cannot call yourself an engineer. I felt that at the National Robotics Competition, watching the SP students arrive in matching t-shirts with proper logistics and masking tape. My team was three ES students and one aerospace student, cobbled together after the school blasted an email about the competition.
We thought we had lost. We went home early, telling ourselves at least we had fun.
We won first place and missed the prize-giving ceremony.
The honest comparison with JC
ES feels like a mix of JC and poly. Grades are still emphasised, just less. I think JC prepares you better for the genuinely rigorous university courses — law, medicine, mathematics — and I also think the grass is always greener.
What I will say plainly is that an overemphasis on grades, especially when it flattens the distinction between science and humanities, produces an unhealthy way of characterising teenagers who are simply trying to work out who they are. A science student gets a B+ in GP and lands at 68.5 RP. Take H3 Maths, get a distinction, and it does not matter — someone who barely got straight As at 70 RP still clears the cut-off first.
I am not saying exams are bad. You will sit plenty of them in ES.
Poly is where a lot of experiences uncover themselves: overseas trips, course trips, CCAs, competitions. That is what it is for, more than the content.
"Do I need strong skills or knowledge already?"
Short answer: no. Concepts are taught from scratch — your first maths lesson will be about y = mx + c.
Longer answer: A-Maths problem-solving helps a lot. Not the content, the habit — expressing an answer so it breaks into simpler parts, and deriving from first principles instead of pattern-matching. That habit carries you through the concepts that are hard to grasp intuitively.
On difficulty: the syllabus is less rigorous than something like HCI's H2 Further Maths revision topics. The physics is roughly H2 and H3 level, with one real difference — ours is highly mathematical, and formulas get derived rather than handed to you.
You will do a lot of projects. Wiring and programming a traffic light from basic components. Designing your own experiment to prove and derive a physics result. Applying systems thinking across a stack of presentations.
People say poly is a marathon. It really is. The content may be easier than JC, but the challenge is what happens when you try to do everything at once and start wondering whether you will make it to next semester. And to be fair to the lectures: sometimes they will feel like they are holding you back.
Parting advice
Your O levels are the priority this year. It is a no-brainer — that score decides a lot about the next milestone. But it is also a process to be enjoyed, and the parts you will remember are the small ones. Talking to your friends. Going to study at the library.
Look up "NP N93" for the actual course details. And if you want the full picture of JC, ask someone in JC — not me.
